n IMPROVE YOUR BACKUP SPEED
This is well known that backup speed is a problem. More often tape drive seems to be the
bottleneck. This is not the case in 80% of my surveys. Too often backup solutions are not
proprely setup. Too many variables are playing at the same time. Most backup admin cannot
isolate them all and do not monitor any performance.
With latest tape drive technologies (LTO-4 or Sun T10000) it is even worst. Disk buffer help slow
servers by allowing data to stream to disk without causing shoeshine effect by fast tape drives.
The shoeshine effect is mainly caused by slow client backup, millions of small files or highly
fragemented file system.
Disk buffer or Virtual tape solve only a portion of your backup speed...slow client backup. If your
clients backup reach a sustain rate of 30 MB/sec or above they should stay on tape. Nearly all
disks buffer solutions or virtual tape uses SATA disk backend. These disks cannot sustain more
than a few of these clients at the same time (less than 20).
